What are software vulnerabilities, and why are there so many of them?
The WannaCry ransomware attack spread rapidly by taking advantage of flaws in the Windows operating system and took control of hundreds of thousands of computers worldwide.
It can be useful to think of hackers as burglars and malicious software as their tools. Both try to find ways into secure places. Hackers, however, usually have more potential points of entry than a burglar.
The weaknesses hackers exploit are flaws in software programs running on a computer. Programs are written by humans and are inherently imperfect. Nobody writes software completely free of errors that may create openings for attackers.
